Show of Houses by Dutch Modernist Architect Shines a Light on Gem in U.S.
A riveting exhibition of photographs of homes by Gerrit Rietveld unearths a mastery, beyond furniture design, of “a new way of living.”
Wealth of Sobriety was first published in 2018. It is a large new book by photographer Arjan Bronkhorst. The book tells the story about architect Gerrit Rietveld and his relation with his clients. In over 500 pages and almost 400 photos a selection of 20 houses and interiors by Gerrit Rietveld are shown extensively. Now, there is an exhibit curated by Barry Bergdoll--Professor of Art History at Columbia University and former Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the MoMA--traveling around the US.
The exhibition presents an opportunity to showcase some of Rietveld's work other than Schroder house and the red-blue chair, especially the house in Ohio designed by Rietveld. After the New York exhibition the show is available to other AIA galleries or museums in mid-September.
