Louis I. Kahn Houses: 1940-1974

This volume was first published in 2003. It is surely the best collection of Kahn houses, and, as such, is indispensable. Twenty houses are featured, including the famous Esherick and Fisher. They are photographed for their light, for their texture, for their detail, for their particular brilliance. Also, a lovely recollection from Norman Fisher, working with his architect:

“Mr. Kahn worked late and our coming to meet him at 10 PM presented no problem to him. We would ring the bell at his Walnut street office. He would lean out the window of the Fourth Floor and drop the keys for us to enter. A hollowed cinder block on his desk was filled with whole nuts - he used a hammer for the nuts and on a good day, there would be an apple.”
