GA: MINKA 1955

Aspiring architecture student Yukio Futagawa set out in the mid-1950s to photograph minka, the traditional rural houses of Japan. From this point, Futagawa's work became to photograph, rather than create, architecture. This large-format compendium of Futagawa's images of villages and homes captures a sequence of history, and the essence of Japanese culture before the country's rapid modernization.
